MY TEACHING PHILOSOPHY

I bring a lot of energy to my class. If I can't get excited about

my subject, why should my students?

There are a number of things I try to accomplish for my students:
  1. A positive atmosphere. Students are called upon to discuss questions, but mistakes are treated as opportunities to explore misconceptions, not as a reflection of a student's abilities.
  2. Using an active approach. I used to engage my students in discussions, activities, and higher-level thinking questions and answer. I believe that all student can learn, therefore I have high expectations for students. I include interesting learning activities in my lessons to grab the attention of students and inspire them to learn.
  3. Fair experimenting and exploring. Students in my class explore meaning, engage in critical thinking, and conduct their own experiments because i love to use inquiry based-learning method when comes to hands on activities. Students can learn from each other if given an environment that balances structure with interactive learning.
  4. Access to a caring individual. No, I don't know all their names. But when I am teaching 180++ students, I work with my place always open, and I am available to help although it require me to extend my working hours to the maximum.
  5. Guide students through the learning process. This necessitates me providing them with the tools for success by facilitating access to what some students may feel is unattainable. The integration of technology is a great equalizer that helps foster a student-centered learning. Technology-rich environments allow students to venture away from isolated learning and into successful partner and small group settings.
  6. As a role model in the class. I  believe in life long learning and leading by example in the classroom and will strive to be a strong, positive role model and to create a warm, welcoming, accepting and safe environment for students where positive reinforcement is emphasized.
  7. Respect. Students work hard, earn their grades, and are entitled to their opinions. My task is to facilitate their learning process. It is my goal to improve student achievement with quality instruction that prepares children to influence the future.

P/S : Actually teaching philosophy is a document in progress. As my teaching changes and my professional identity grows, my teaching philosophy will also change and grow. So revisit because i will rewrite it as my beliefs and experiences progress and change... :)

REFLECTION 11 - MENDELEY

MENDELEY  PRESENTED BY BADRULHISHAM !!!!

Mendeley is a free reference manager and academic social network that can help us organize our research, collaborate with others online, and discover the latest research. The advantages of Mendeley are :
  • Automatically generate bibliographies
  • Collaborate easily with other researchers online
  • Easily import papers from other research software
  • Find relevant papers based on what you’re reading

Mendeley organizes our electronic articles and citations, makes writing a works cited or a list of references a snap, and lets we easily share our work with colleagues across the hall or around the world. What I love most about the system is the ability to conduct a title or keyword as well as a full-text search of the stored pdfs. Mendeley finds each instance of the search term, and allows me to quickly click through each instance.  Additionally, Mendeley makes it easy to have several PDFs open at once, and to easily move between them by clicking through the tabs. In addition to the search tool, Mendeley also includes a highlighter, notes areas, and other annotation tools.  I’ve been using the general notes area text box to jot down thoughts and page numbers for sources that would not import as PDFs, like books.  Since most of my research is available in PDFs, though, the Insert Note annotation feature has been more beneficial in helping me navigate back through an article.

REFLECTION 10 - CHEMSKETCH

CHEMSKETCH  PRESENTED BY NORAZELA !!!!

ChemSketch uses many standard file formats for the import and export of drawings. The program allows the user to draw chemical structures including organics, organometallics, polymers, and Markush structures. Besides that, users can download a free version the software on the ACD/Labs website.

I have also learnt to draw structure of molecule, draw set-up apparatus and write chemical equation by using Chemsketch. There are several advantages of Chemsketch application, which are:
  • Draw and view structures in 2D, or render in 3D to view from any angle
  • Draw reactions and reaction schemes, and calculate reactant quantities
  • Generate structures from InChI and SMILES strings
  • Generate IUPAC systematic names for molecules of up to 50 atoms and 3 ring structures
  • Predict logP for individual structures
  • Search for structures in the built-in dictionary of over 165,000 systematic, trivial, and trade names
  • Visualize chemical structures in 2D or 3D to gain more insight into spatial configurations, and relationships to molecular properties
  • Create professional reports, working with structures, text, and graphics simultaneously
In short, Chemsketch is a very good tools to create teaching and learning materials and tools. Below is the example of complexes drawn by using Chemsketch.

By using chemsketch all work, exercise, practice problem for student can be done within short time. No more of using "manually" drawing inside Microsoft word. Beside that, it work best when come to draw molecular structure for organic compound. On the other hand, drawing apparatus for chemistry laboratory will be so much fun.

REFLECTION 9 - POWERPOINT PRESENTATION

MICROSOFT POWERPOINT  PRESENTED BY MUHAMAD NAZRI !!!!

Powerpoint presentation seems normal for me actually at the first time NAZRI wants to introduce Powerpoint presentation. But surprisingly that there many advance features in Powerpoint that i never use before. Advanced use of PowerPoint includes adding visual interest to our presentation that will grab the audience's attention through custom animations and transitions. Features such as effects and sounds, layered instructions, and timed presentations allow presenters to polish their slides at a professional level.

As for me as an educator, i always use Powerpoint to present notes to the students and make it more interactive.
But, with guide from NAZRI, i can actually make better Powerpoint presentation that is more interactive and friendly to the students with extra exciting features.

REFLECTION 8 - MOVIE MAKER

WINDOWS MOVIE MAKER  PRESENTED BY NORLIYANA !!!!

The next software that we learned is Window Movie Maker that enables us to create home movies and slide shows, complete with professional looking titles, transitions, effects, music and even narrations.

I've used Movie Maker before and i love to use Movie Maker. What I learned while using Movie Maker is how to find quotes for my topic, and find pictures of my topic. Then upload them onto Movie Maker, and drag them to a slide. And type in quotes to put in the slide.  And change the font, and color of the slides, and the text. Also, how to go do downloads.nl to search a song, and upload it. Then upload it to Movie Maker, and add it to my slide. Also, how to add transitions in the slide, and in-between the slides, to show a transition when the next slide/picture/ quote comes up.  Something I liked about Movie Maker was that you can add your own pictures, and change the color of the slides, and text. Another thing I like about Movie Maker is, that we get to find our own music, and add is to the slide, and Movie Maker to go with the subject we picked. Plus, it is very easy to explore.

Have a look at my wedding plots... hehehe...

REFLECTION 7 - ONE NOTE

MICROSOFT ONE NOTE  PRESENTED BY CHEW KEAT GEORK !!!!

Designed to function as an electronic version of a paper notebook, Microsoft OneNote is a note-taking and personal information management application for collecting, organizing and sharing digital information.  By storing text notes, photos, audio and video snippets, handwriting and similar content, Microsoft OneNote collects and organizes the information, making it available for searching as well as sharing with others.

If we go to a meeting or lecture and don’t feel like taking notes, don’t worry-OneNote can cover for us. Once the lecture starts, record the audio (click theInsert tab, then click the Record Audio button). When something exciting happens, take a very small note. When the lecture ends, stop the recording. If we want to go back to the exciting moment, just click the play button next to our note, and it will play the audio from the point in the lecture when we took the note. Awesome is an appropriate word to describe this, I think!

Here's the advantages of OneNote :

  • Gather and store many types of information, including text, pictures, audio, and video
  • Easily move and reorganize all or part of our notebooks
  • Record audio and video
  • Share a single notebook with several contributors on a network or over the Internet
  • Print all or part of a notebook and create Word or PDF documents from the notebook contents
  • Finally, can reduce paper clutter and waste... hihi

Although Microsoft OneNote already installed since i bought the notebook, but i don't know

the existence of the OneNote until CHEW introduce in our class of its uses. I'm glad i've

learned it because it can help me in my teaching such as edit words from the pictures, record

audio and video and store many types of my documents.

REFLECTION 6 - DOCUMENT MAP

DOCUMENT MAP PRESENTED BY AZMA !!!!

Actually, i don't know about Document map before. Document Map is one useful feature in Word, which I could see people use rarely. The feature creates a list of headings and sub headings automatically in a separate pane.

This feature is useful while browsing lengthy documents. Document Map pane presents a list of all the headings, sub headings of the document. The list enables us to quickly jump from one heading/subheading to another without scrolling endlessly.
As we browse through the pages of a document, Document Map immediately identifies and highlights the corresponding heading in the Document Map pane based on where we click in the document. So, we won’t get lost irrespective of how big the document is.

REFLECTION 5 - MICROSOFT EXCEL

MICROSOFT EXCEL PRESENTED BY SHAHRIZATUAZUIN  !!!!

My next reflection is on Microsoft Excel, a spreadsheet-software. Excel is very useful to a variety of different types of people, making it meet the principle of equitable use. For example, Excel can be useful to teachers and  students.  Excel also has a wide range of flexibility in use, with its range of templates, tools, and uses. For instance, Excel can create simple spreadsheets, graphs, tables and can also generate percentages, formulas, and insert SmartArt. The rows and columns also are re-sizable for whatever the users wanted size is.

Excel also has simple and intuitive use since the design is easy to use and simple to understand. There is also a “review” tool option to provide effective feedback after task completion. Excel also meets the perceptible information design, due to its use of different modes (pictorial and printed). The tolerance for error principle is also used in Excel since it has an edit tool, called “undo”.  Excel also has a low physical effort, meaning it is not too difficult to use and does not require much effort to understand. It provides an easy tool to click on to save the document, can easily differentiate columns with multiple colors, and can even transform written information into a graph or table form (with the push of only a couple keys).

My classmate, SHAHRIZATUAZUIN, teach us on how to draw graph based on the data tabulated. It was very useful since i can use the software to analysed students marks in their exam.

REFLECTION 4 - MICROSOFT PUBLISHER

MICROSOFT PUBLISHER PRESENTED BY  NURUL AIN !!!

Using Microsoft Publisher has endless benefits. Being a user-friendly application, it helped me to manage my work and get the job done with its organized and easy to understand interface.  In my profession as a teacher, it enabled me to publish cards and programme booklet for my events in school . It also assisted in creating other documents such as banners, posters, brochures and charts for my classroom. I really enjoy using Microsoft Publisher, because it enhances creativity and my designing skills.

I used Microsoft Publisher to do Brochure for event in school....

Exploring Microsoft Publisher, I learned how to use the many features of the program. I learned how to create logos, preview different font and color schemes, convert publications for viewing on the internet, and how to create professional looking layouts using Publisher’s many templates. I also discovered that Microsoft Publisher can be used in many the same ways as Microsoft Word such as inserting images, drawing, and WordArt. Working with and learning the skills associated with Microsoft Publisher, would greatly benefit me especially in my profession as a teacher.

REFLECTION 3 - PICASA

PICASA PRESENTED BY KAMILY !!!!

Before this, i only use Microsoft Picture Editor to edit my photos. Because it is easy to use and available easily in the Microsoft. I've heard about Picasa before this, and when i bought my latest notebook, Picasa was already installed in the notebook. I rarely use Picasa.

On 14 March 2014, KAMILY, one of my classmates present about Picasa. Picasa is software that enables photo editing, collage and poster creation and also allows us to create video of photos. Picasa version 3.0 was used. After expose to Picasa, i find it very interesting because it has a number of features like we can add light to photos taken in dark. There are many features in Picasa from cropping, light effects to numerous filters. There are also many effects available to enhance our photos.Video can also be created from the piles of photo we have. Moreover , we can use this software in editing some photos or make videos to present in our class.

Picasa has many photo-editing options, including tuning light and balance aspects and basic to advanced effects. Its side by side editing option allows us to compare two photos as we make these edits. With this option, we can view an original photo next to its edited version while we add edits, view two different edited versions of the same photo, or view two different photos.

Below is the example of photos that i edit using Picasa...the colour looks more vibrant... :)

The below one is non-edited version....

REFLECTION 2 - WORDPRESS

WORDPRESS PRESENTED BY SYAZWANI !!!!

Same like blogspot, wordpress is also an open source software which is FREE... based on what syazwani present to us, we does not have to be an expert to use WordPress on our website.
The advantage of Wordpress over blogspot is WordPress is blessed with features like plugin and a strong community to get support. When I was on BlogSpot I spent lots of time editing my theme to show related posts and adding such features. WordPress makes your life easy using simple plugins for everything you need. By using plugins, we can achieve anything and if not, we can take help of WordPress support forum to get custom code and extend the capabilities of your blog.

But the disadvantage of wordpress for me is it is too power where it comes with great complexity. To take full advantage of WordPress features, we need to host it on our server, which can add significant overhead in terms of hosting, domain and CDN costs. For me, its more suitable for professional bloggers and media companies and businesses that require a stable, professional blogging solution.

REFLECTION 1 - BLOGSPOT

BLOGSPOT PRESENTED BY SYARFA FURZANNE (ME)!!!!

As I look back on my presentation and the preparation that when into it I am amazed by the amount I’ve learned from this one small exercise to present blogspot to all my class member. I'm afraid that i might not be able to present well.
In the rest of this reflection I am going to write reflecting on different parts of my presentation and how I could have done it better and improve it for the next time.
I definitely found that to make a presentation on a topic the presenter must have an interest and a great knowledge of the topic and of course time. I've did blog before but only based on the basic using of blogspot. So, i've to try and search more on how to use blogspot maximumly before presenting to the class.
I also found that if visual aid is going to be used for the presentation, like a power point presentation a lot of work has to go into developing and making sure that the visual aid isn’t the whole presentation and that you have other notes to help with it. It is also important that if visual aid is going to be used you make sure that it will work at the time of the presentation. I'm happy during the presentation because the computers and slides and internet wokrs greatly on that day.
I found that structure of the presentation is very important so that the audience can follow it and understand the presentation. I hope that all my classmates can understand my presentation and be able to help them in using blogspot later on. I also add up question and answer session so that if my classmates have any problem regarding the blogspot, they can raise up.
Nervousness is a major problem for many people during public speaking. But for me, i found out that i only feel nervous at the beginning and then already can present loudly and clearly. I think that nervousness before this has been resolved through my experiences as a teacher in conducting my lessons.
Because of presenting blogspot, surprisingly i love to blog more but because of time lacking, i have to really concentrate of my work and my assignment before i can write anything in blogspot. Actually blogspot also can make friends when you allow people who read your blog to become your follower. i hope that i can continue blogging in future in terms of delivering content of the chemistry subject plus writing about cooking too... hehehe...
Finally, I would like to thank my fellow classmates and lecturer for the feedback I was given for this presentation which helped me write this reflection and improve my presenting skills.
THANKS AGAIN.... <3
